Four decades. Five technology generations.

I'm an independent technology advisor based in Rome. Over four decades I've moved through five distinct technology generations — from mainframe systems to the PC, through multimedia and the web, and now into AI. What stays constant is the result: targets reached, expectations met.

I started as a systems developer, building the business-critical systems banks and insurance companies relied on, then led projects through the shift to PC-based business computing. I co-founded Cassiopeia, an ICT consultancy delivering multimedia and search/retrieval systems for organizations including IVECO, Alenia, Enel, Telecom Italia, the European Union, and the City Councils of Rome and Venice. I also directed technology strategy for a multi-school education district as an outside consultant, driving technology adoption across teaching and administration. My work also extended to the national level — advising Italy's Ministry of Economic Development, evaluating high-technology R&D funding as a panel member on the FIT Technical Committee, sitting on the Board of Advisors for retItalia/ICE on foreign trade infrastructure, researching ICT innovation strategy for Italy's industrial districts, and overseeing workflow automation at CNEL.

Today, my focus is hands-on: directing the migration of legacy systems onto modern platforms, and designing connected, sensor-driven infrastructure for automated environments. This current, close-to-the-ground work keeps my judgment grounded in what's actually feasible, not just what's fashionable, and gives me a direct, first-hand view of how a technology transition actually plays out inside an organization.

Every one of these transitions looked disruptive and unprecedented at the time. None of them were, in hindsight, unmanageable — with the right person directing them.
